Doula certification courses are a scam.

I say this as someone who has taken a few different Doula certification courses. 

I understand that people use their time, energy, and knowledge to create these courses and they want to be paid for that.

But did you know that you don’t have to be certified to practice as a doula?

Doula work exists OUTSIDE of the realm of medicalization, institutionalization, and regulatory bodies. At least, it should… when done right. 

Doula certification courses repackage information that you can easily acquire on your own and then sell it to you with the promise of an unnecessary certificate upon completion. Then some of the really scammy courses make you RECERTIFY continuously (which costs you each time, of course). 

Of course doula certification courses come in all shapes and sizes. I know some good people who run some of the better training programs. But for the most part it is the same cookie-cutter, conveyor belt, institutionalized options. The ones that will tell you to tiptoe around hospital policies. The ones that will tell you not to make waves. The ones that will tell you not to have a opinions or beliefs about birth at all. The ones that will mould you into a cog in the industrial birth machine. The ones that will make you complacent. 

Again— I know there may be some magical unicorn trainings that aren’t like this, but I still say— if you are an independent learner, you probably don’t actually need a doula training. It will just siphon away your money and your individuality.

    It does not include my mentorship, nor does it include a certification. Both are available separately.
